Monitoring tools fail in two directions and both of them are expensive. They cry wolf — a single blip from a single location wakes you at 3am for a site that was never down — or they run entirely inside the platform they're supposed to be watching, so a regional outage takes down the site and the thing that was meant to tell you about it at the same moment. There is a third gap nobody covers well: a scheduled job that simply stops firing produces no error, no log and no alert. It just goes quiet, and quiet is indistinguishable from healthy. And when something genuinely does break, the alert tells you what failed but not why — you still start from zero at the worst possible time.
Checks do not run on the same platform as the app. Two always-on probers sit on Fly.io in Virginia and Amsterdam, which is what makes real ICMP ping, TCP connects, traceroute and MTR possible at all — serverless functions cannot do any of them. A confirmed failure has to be seen from both regions before an incident opens, which is what removes most false alarms. A Cloudflare Worker on a separate cron watches MakoPulse itself, so 'everything is quiet because everything is down' still reaches a human. When an incident opens, Claude re-probes from both regions, runs traceroutes, inspects DNS and certificate state, and posts a plain-English root cause with next steps within about a minute — then writes the post-mortem automatically when it resolves. Alerts escalate on a timer through email, SMS, and phone calls that read the alert aloud, so a sleeping phone is not a single point of failure. Cron jobs get inbound heartbeats instead of outbound checks: the job pings a URL each run, and MakoPulse alerts when a check-in does not arrive inside its expected window. Certificate and domain-expiry monitoring stays deliberately quiet on auto-renewing hosts until expiry is genuinely close, because an alert you learn to ignore is worse than no alert.

HTTP availability, keyword present, keyword absent, expected status code, real ICMP ping, TCP port, and full headless-Chrome browser checks that catch JavaScript errors a status-code check cannot see. Response times break down by DNS, connect, TLS, and transfer phase, per region.
AI incident diagnosis and automatic post-mortems
An opening incident triggers a re-probe from both regions plus traceroute and DNS/SSL inspection, and Claude posts a plain-English root cause with next steps in about a minute. When it resolves, the post-mortem writes itself.
Escalation that reaches a person
Timed escalation ladders across email, SMS, and phone calls that read the alert aloud, plus webhook and Slack-style integrations and on-call assignment — so an unacknowledged incident climbs instead of sitting.
Heartbeat monitoring for scheduled jobs
Inbound check-ins with a period and grace window, for the failure mode nothing else catches: a cron that silently stops firing. Now deployed across every scheduled job in the Mako fleet.
Branded public status pages
Customer-facing status pages with 90-day uptime history, email subscriptions, and custom domains — so a client's own visitors get told before they have to ask.
Live network diagnostics + read-only API
Traceroute, MTR, and ping on demand from either region against any incident, plus a read-only REST API over monitors and incidents for pulling status into other systems.
